I’ve beloved preaching John 4 over time. It’s wealthy, dynamic, and may circulation in all types of instructions.
The issue is: I lately realised I’ve been portraying the Samaritan lady flawed this complete time.
You’ve most likely heard the widespread portrayals too. You may need even preached them like I’ve:
-
She’s sinful – 5 husbands, and now dwelling with a person who isn’t her husband.
-
She’s an outcast – compelled to gather water alone within the warmth of the day.
It preaches effectively. It connects with folks’s disgrace and brokenness. It makes for an excellent altar name.
However one thing doesn’t add up.
If she’s such a infamous sinner and outcast, why does the entire village take heed to her and imagine her? That appears… unlikely.
“Most of the Samaritans from that city believed in him due to the lady’s testimony.” (John 4:39)
Outcasts don’t often get that sort of listening to.
