7 Issues God Hates | Worship Leaders College

The Bible is stuffed with declarations about God’s love, mercy, grace, and compassion. But it additionally speaks plainly about what God hates. This isn’t a contradiction—it’s a mirrored image of His excellent character. A God who deeply loves righteousness and human flourishing should essentially hate all the things that destroys, deceives, and damages these very issues.

One of many clearest and most well-known passages on this subject is present in Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIV):

There are six issues the LORD hates,
seven which might be detestable to him:
haughty eyes,
a mendacity tongue,
arms that shed harmless blood,
a coronary heart that devises depraved schemes,
ft which might be fast to hurry into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies
and an individual who stirs up battle locally.

This checklist is poetic in construction. The “six… seven” system is a Hebrew manner of emphasizing completeness—listed here are the core issues God finds totally abhorrent, with the seventh typically carrying particular weight.

Let’s have a look at each rigorously, as a result of these aren’t random vices. They reveal what grieves the guts of God most deeply.

1. Haughty eyes (a proud look)

Pleasure tops the checklist. “Haughty eyes” describe the boastful look that appears down on others, the lifted eyebrow of superiority, the belief that “I’m higher/smarter/extra deserving.”
Pleasure was the unique sin of Lucifer (Isaiah 14; Ezekiel 28). It separates us from God and from individuals. God opposes the proud however provides grace to the standard (James 4:6). After we carry haughty eyes, we are actually strolling in the wrong way of God’s kingdom values.

2. A mendacity tongue

God is reality. Jesus referred to as Himself “the reality” (John 14:6). Lies are subsequently anti-God at their core.
This consists of not simply outright falsehoods, however exaggeration, half-truths, manipulation, gossip disguised as concern, and any speech meant to deceive or hurt. A mendacity tongue destroys belief, which is the inspiration of all wholesome relationships—human and divine.

3. Arms that shed harmless blood

This speaks to homicide, violence towards the defenseless, and the taking of harmless life.
The Bible persistently condemns the shedding of harmless blood—from Cain killing Abel, to the sacrifice of kids to Molech, to judicial homicide, to trendy types of violence towards the susceptible. God is fiercely protecting of the harmless, the weak, the unborn, the oppressed.

4. A coronary heart that devises depraved schemes

That is premeditated evil—plotting hurt, scheming for private achieve at others’ expense, planning cruelty.
It’s not a spontaneous sin; it’s calculated. The guts right here is the interior management heart. When the creativeness is used to invent methods to harm moderately than assist, God is grieved.

5. Ft which might be fast to hurry into evil

This describes eagerness to do flawed. As a substitute of resisting temptation, the particular person runs towards it.
The ft symbolize our path in life. Swift ft towards evil present a coronary heart already inclined that manner—no hesitation, no wrestling, simply eagerness to sin.

6. A false witness who pours out lies

This overlaps with #2 however focuses particularly on perjury, slander, and courtroom (or public) deception.
In historic Israel, false testimony may actually price somebody their life (Deuteronomy 19:16-21). God hates it as a result of it perverts justice, one of many pillars He cares most about (Micah 6:8). False witness destroys lives and mocks the reality.

7. An individual who stirs up battle locally (sows discord amongst brothers)

Many interpreters see this because the climactic merchandise—the one which pulls the entire checklist collectively.
Division, gossip, factionalism, backbiting, and deliberate stirring of strife amongst God’s individuals are particularly detestable. Why? As a result of the church (and any covenant group) is supposed to replicate the unity of the Trinity. When somebody sows discord, they assault the very factor Jesus prayed for in John 17: “that they might be one.”

Why This Issues At the moment

This checklist isn’t an exhaustive catalog of each sin God hates. Scripture additionally says God hates idolatry, divorce (within the context of treacherous covenant-breaking), theft, injustice, false faith, and extra. However Proverbs 6 provides us a targeted portrait of the sorts of attitudes and behaviors which might be most damaging to human relationships and to fellowship with God.

Discover the development:

  • It begins within the eyes (perspective)
  • Strikes to the tongue (phrases)
  • Then arms (actions)
  • Coronary heart (intentions)
  • Ft (path)
  • Witness (public testimony)
  • And ends with group (relationships)

It’s a full-body image of sin—from interior perspective to outward destruction of fellowship.

The Hope in Understanding What God Hates

The excellent news is that God doesn’t hate us—He hates the sin that damages us and others. He despatched His Son exactly as a result of He loves sinners sufficient to rescue them from these very issues (Romans 5:8).

After we see these traits in our personal lives, the right response isn’t despair, however repentance and transformation. The gospel provides forgiveness and actual change via Christ. The Holy Spirit works in us to exchange pleasure with humility, lies with reality, hatred with love, division with unity.

Could we hate what God hates—not with self-righteous judgment towards others, however first towards the sin nonetheless lingering in our personal hearts. And will we love what God loves: reality, justice, mercy, humility, and peace amongst His individuals.

“The worry of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pleasure and vanity and the best way of evil and perverted speech I hate.”
— Proverbs 8:13

Let that worry lead us to knowledge, repentance, and real love for God and neighbor.
