The Lord Is My Shepherd; I Have All That I Want

(Psalm 23:1)

Few verses in all of Scripture are as beloved, memorized, and quietly trusted because the opening line of Psalm 23:

“The Lord is my shepherd;
I’ve all that I want.”

In a single quick sentence, David provides us a theology of belief, provision, and peace that has carried believers by means of centuries of uncertainty, worry, and alter.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

David doesn’t say a shepherd or the shepherd in a distant, summary sense. He says, my shepherd. That is private. Intimate. Relational.

A shepherd is aware of his sheep individually—their weaknesses, tendencies, fears, and desires. Jesus later echoed this identical reality when He mentioned, “I do know My sheep, they usually know Me.” (John 10:14)

To admit that the Lord is my shepherd is to confess two issues without delay:

  • I belong to Him.
  • I’m not self-sufficient.

Sheep will not be sturdy, quick, or particularly intelligent. They survive as a result of they’re led. And that’s exactly the posture God invitations us into—not helplessness, however humble dependence.

Management You Can Belief

shepherd goes forward of the sheep. He sees hazard earlier than they do. He leads them to protected pasture, nonetheless water, and relaxation. He doesn’t drive them; he guides them.

When David calls the Lord his shepherd, he’s declaring confidence in God’s management. Even when the trail is unclear, the Shepherd is aware of the place He’s going.

This verse reminds us that God’s steering shouldn’t be reactive or random. He leads with intention, knowledge, and care—usually in methods we solely perceive later.

“I Have All That I Want”

This isn’t a denial of need, problem, or hardship. David knew starvation, hazard, betrayal, and loss. But he may nonetheless say, “I’ve all that I want.”

Why? As a result of contentment shouldn’t be rooted in circumstances—it’s rooted in belief.

This line doesn’t imply:

  • I’ve the whole lot I need
  • I’ll by no means wrestle
  • I’ll by no means face lack

It means:

  • God is not going to fail me
  • What He offers can be sufficient
  • What He withholds is purposeful

When the Lord is our shepherd, want is redefined. Our deepest wants—for route, peace, forgiveness, hope, and safety—are met in Him.

Freedom From Anxiousness

A lot of our anxiousness comes from attempting to shepherd ourselves. We fear as a result of we really feel liable for outcomes we can not management.

Psalm 23:1 gently invitations us to put that burden down.

If the Lord is actually our shepherd, then provision is His duty. Safety is His duty. Route is His duty.

Our function is to not know the whole lot—however to observe.

A Each day Confession of Belief

This verse shouldn’t be solely meant to be admired; it’s meant to be lived.

Every day we will say:

  • Lord, You lead me.
  • Lord, what I want.
  • Lord, You’re sufficient for me immediately.

And after we do, peace follows—not as a result of life is easy, however as a result of the Shepherd is trustworthy.

Remaining Thought

Psalm 23 doesn’t start with inexperienced pastures or nonetheless waters. It begins with relationship.

“The Lord is my shepherd.”

All the pieces else flows from that reality. When He leads, we lack nothing that actually issues.

And that’s greater than sufficient.
