Every November, many people share our “25 Days of Thankfulness” on social media, honoring all of the blessings God has bestowed on our lives. Nonetheless, this gratitude apply ought to start lengthy earlier than somebody is sufficiently old to have a digital presence. The truth is, Scripture instructions that we lead our prayers with a coronary heart of thankfulness, praising Him for His windfall and provision earlier than we start our listing of requests. Philippians 4:6 says, “Don’t be concerned about something, however in each scenario, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, current your requests to God.”
A coronary heart posture of gratitude spiritually prepares us for continued blessings from God. I ponder how usually I haven’t observed vital, blatant items from Him as a result of I used to be too involved with grumbling and complaining about issues I needed or thought I wanted. Little question, my egocentric tunnel imaginative and prescient has usually blinded my coronary heart to the goodness round me.
I’ve acknowledged my tendency in direction of complaining and permitting fears to curate prayers constructed on something however gratitude. Now that I’ve a son, I’m much more conscious of my must refocus my prayer life so I actively reward God for His continued mercy and style. As a dad or mum, I have to introduce easy gratitude practices, even for my toddler, who received’t sit nonetheless lengthy sufficient to take part in something too complicated.
As a mama (and a gal with 5 years of nannying expertise, working with three Christian households), I’ve found some gratitude practices that work properly for all ages and simply foster a behavior of thankfulness. If you happen to’re searching for a contemporary option to heart your kids’s hearts on gratitude this Thanksgiving, take into account these festive, enjoyable concepts:
1. Reward Pumpkin
One household I nannied for had a pumpkin they positioned on their fire, and every day they let their two younger ladies (18 months and three years outdated) inform them one factor they have been grateful for. The dad and mom then wrote these issues on the pumpkin with a marker. In truth, a number of issues they have been grateful for have been hysterical, particularly for the reason that 18-month-old little one had a restricted vocabulary. Nonetheless, the dad and mom shared with me that the women have been thrilled every morning to hurry over to the pumpkin and current what they have been grateful for that day.
Irrespective of the age of your kiddos, take into account having a reward pumpkin in your house. You’ll be able to place it on the fireside, the kitchen desk, the entrance porch, or wherever is greatest. Every day, let your kids state one factor they’re grateful for, or one factor they need to reward God for.
I like to recommend that your loved ones sit collectively for this exercise, whether or not at breakfast, dinner, or earlier than bedtime. Let the older children write out their solutions and even lead the exercise for his or her youthful siblings. We too simply overlook the affect our older kiddos have on the littler ones, and we’re much more neglectful in remembering that our tweens and teenagers must be positioned in positions the place they’ll lead, particularly in a faith-based capability.
In the meantime, dad and mom should do not forget that gratitude is crucial, even wholesome, for the human thoughts and physique. Telling our children who they need to be grateful to is much more crucial. As James 1:17 states, “Each good and excellent present is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who doesn’t change like shifting shadows.”
When our kids acknowledge the importance of every day gratitude and domesticate a coronary heart posture of humility to God, they instill everlasting peace that received’t falter, even on days when it appears onerous to search out something to be pleased about. This faith-based behavior might be wanted as they develop up, when grownup life comes with heavier tasks and realities.
2. Gratitude Tree
I just lately noticed this concept of a gratitude tree, and I hope to strive it with my two-year-old son this 12 months (although he whittles most crafts/artistic shows into weapons). Go to your yard, discover a decent-sized department with loads of smaller limbs, or store for a small faux tree at your native craft retailer. Make it a centerpiece on your eating room desk or the focus of one other house in your house. (You have to to create a gradual base for the tree so it stands upright and balances properly.)
Seize some fall-colored building paper and minimize out small leaves. Place the pile of leaves beneath the tree and let the youngsters write down one factor they’re grateful for every day. Take mini clothespins and pin the leaves to the small branches of the tree.
Start this apply on November 1st, and as soon as Thanksgiving has arrived, your gratitude tree might be full of shiny leaves and the sweetest handwritten items of your little one’s coronary heart. On Thanksgiving Day, take into account finishing the gratitude tree by letting every member of the family add their leaf of thankfulness.
3. “I Am Grateful for…” Tablecloth
It’s so impactful when a baby witnesses their whole household coming collectively to reward God and thank Him. It’s a legacy that may settle of their hearts for a lifetime. I encourage you to create an “I Am Grateful for…” tablecloth for this 12 months’s Thanksgiving celebration. (If Thanksgiving isn’t at your property, take into account asking the host household should you can present up a couple of minutes early and enhance together with your “I Am Grateful for…” tablecloth.)
These tablecloths are easy to make—and low cost! You solely want a paper bulletin board lengthy sufficient to suit your desk. Most individuals go for the standard brown colour, however different fall colours are good. At every place setting, take a marker and write “I Am Grateful for…” and draw three numbered strains under, the place every particular person can write three issues they’re grateful for this 12 months. (If the children are tremendous excited, they’ll add enjoyable designs, decorations, and borders nevertheless they please.)
After everyone seems to be seated and has accomplished their listing, circle and have every particular person share the three issues they’re most grateful for. An alternative choice is utilizing this as a prayer immediate. Earlier than consuming, everybody can go in a circle and thank God for what’s on their listing.
This is a wonderful manner for kids to witness every member of the family give audible thanks and reward to God. It’s a good higher manner for them to apply thanking God for His goodness of their lives. (And what a blessing it’s to listen to kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers, share how they see God’s trustworthy hand of their lives!)
An Everlasting Coronary heart Posture
Thanksgiving was born from a historic meal when Pilgrims and Native People got here collectively to rejoice surviving a brutal winter that left many with out primary wants. Although the Native People didn’t apply Christianity, the Pilgrims used this chance to honor and reward God for His plain windfall and provision, particularly in a time of such loss and struggling.
