What If the Lord Had Not Been on Our Facet?

Reflections on Psalm 124

Have you ever ever seemed again at your life and requested, “What if God hadn’t helped me?” That’s precisely what David does in Psalm 124—a brief, vivid psalm that invitations us to mirror on God’s devoted presence in our previous and current.

“What if the Lord had not been on our aspect?”
— Psalm 124:1 (NLT)

David opens the psalm with this query, then instantly invitations all of Israel to echo it:

“Let all Israel repeat: What if the Lord had not been on our aspect when folks attacked us?” (v.2)

It’s a rhetorical query, but it surely’s meant to stir deep gratitude and religious consciousness. David leads us in remembering the moments when life may have gone terribly unsuitable—however didn’t. Why? As a result of God was on our aspect.

Remembering the Shut Calls

David recollects harmful conditions that might have overwhelmed Israel like a flood, a raging fireplace, or a hunter’s entice. These will not be delicate inconveniences; they’re life-threatening moments.

“The waters would have engulfed us… the torrent would have swept over us…” (vv. 4-5)

For many people, these phrases carry recollections to thoughts—automotive accidents that might have led to tragedy, diagnoses that might have gone the opposite approach, crises we didn’t suppose we’d survive, or seasons of despair, loss, or betrayal. We glance again and say with David, “If the Lord had not been on our aspect…”

A Private Testimony

This psalm is greater than poetry—it’s testimony. It’s the form of worship that wells up after the storm has handed and also you notice: God carried me by means of. David doesn’t simply sing about God abstractly; he factors to actual deliverance.

“Reward the Lord, who didn’t let their tooth tear us aside!” (v.6)
“Our assistance is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (v.8)

The psalm begins with a query and ends with a declaration. That’s the journey of religion: from questioning to worship, from concern to religion, from hindsight to hallelujah.

What About You?

Take a second to mirror:

  • What conditions did you survive solely by the grace of God?
  • Are you able to see how God protected you—even whenever you didn’t notice it on the time?
  • Who may be inspired right this moment in the event you shared your testimony?

Psalm 124 reminds us that we’re not alone, and by no means have been. God was there—when others turned in opposition to you, when life was overwhelming, when concern gripped your coronary heart, whenever you didn’t know what to do subsequent. And He’s nonetheless with you now.

Closing Thought

The subsequent time you’re tempted to overlook God’s faithfulness, echo David’s opening line:
“What if the Lord had not been on our aspect?”
Let that query lead you straight into reward.
