Please share a quick abstract of your guide.
Prayer emerges as poetry and poetry reveals itself as prayer. What’s gathered right here, on this guide, are poems born out of the form of private wrestling that always retains me up late into the night time and ushers me to locations of prayer. These writings, each the prayers and the poems, are catalysts for reflection and dialog, autos carrying us to these locations the place we discover ourselves on frequent floor, each the troublesome and the pleasant.
Why did you write this guide?
Just a few years in the past, I had been posting parts of my morning devotions, sharing with my Fb group. I used to be inspired by a rising variety of mates to place the morning prayers right into a guide. The method of studying the way to deliver a guide to life intersected with some main private challenges, when what had been, for me, some very significant work, was delivered to a really abrupt finish.
The poet Sonia Sanchez says that on this American panorama, significantly as black folks, we should “re-imagine” ourselves each ten to fifteen years. Writing this guide has been part of my work of “re-imagining” myself as poet and performer, studying what each of these roles imply and the impression of storytellers on the world stage. I wrote this guide as voice, as comfort and encouragement, as imaginative and prescient and dreaming, as fact telling, as therapeutic. That is the place prayer and sacred creativeness takes us once we discover the depths of it, in search of one thing past the superficial and merely transactional. This guide, these poems and prayers, are about seeing: seeing self, seeing one another on this frequent floor of our humanity, and seeing the divine. Late Evening Choices & Morning Prayers replicate on the delight and the ache of previous, current and future. Battle and celebration are given voice right here.
