Prayer is the soul’s honest need,
Unuttered or expressed,
The movement of a hidden fireplace
That trembles within the breast.
Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of a watch
When none however God is close to.
Prayer is the best type of speech
That toddler lips can attempt,
Prayer the sublimest strains that attain
The Majesty on excessive.
Prayer is the Christian’s important breath,
The Christian’s native air,
His watchword on the gates of loss of life;
He enters heav’n with prayer.
Prayer is the contrite sinner’s voice,
Coming back from his methods,
Whereas angels of their songs rejoice
And cry, “Behold, he prays!”
The saints in prayer seem as one
In phrase, in deed, and thoughts
Whereas with the Father and the Son
Candy fellowship they discover.
Nor prayer is made on earth alone;
The Holy Spirit pleads,
And Jesus, on th’everlasting throne,
For sinners intercedes.
O Thou by whom we come to God,
The life, the reality, the way in which,
The trail of prayer Thyself hast trod;
Lord, educate us the right way to pray.
