Dueling Parades – Nonetheless Waters

This Palm Sunday studying facilities round two totally different parades that occur in Jerusalem: the one led by Pilate and the one led by Jesus. The script is designed to be interactive with the entire congregation.

I first arrange the studying by sharing the e book, A Pig Parade Is a Horrible Thought by Michael Ian
Black.

The script was impressed by a quote from John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg, The Final Week.

Two processions entered Jerusalem on a spring day within the yr 30. . . One was a peasant procession, the opposite an imperial procession. From the east, Jesus rode a donkey down the Mouth of Olives, cheered by his followers. . . On the alternative facet of town, from the west, Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Idumea, Judea, and Samaria, entered Jerusalem on the head of a column of imperial calvary and troopers. Jesus’s procession proclaimed the dominion of God; Pilate’s proclaimed the ability of empire.

Narrator

It’s Passover, when the individuals of God keep in mind how the individuals of Israel escaped slavery in Egypt. And identical to each Passover, Pontius Pilate, buddy of the Roman emperor, parades via Jerusalem on a stallion from the west.

Congregation

Narrator

. . . in addition to a crowd of foot troopers, donning leather-based armor, helmets, weapons, banners, golden eagles mounted on poles, and a cavalry on horses.

Congregation

Narrator

There was no cheering from the gang or praises sung. Simply the sounds of the marching of ft, the creaking of leather-based, the clinking of bridles, the beating of drums.  The swirling of mud. And the sounds that horses make.

Congregation

Narrator

This was a chance for Pilate to indicate off his energy and remind everybody who guidelines the land.

Congregation

Narrator

Pilate made positive everybody knew who was the One to be worshipped. It was Caesar, the true son of God.

Congregation

Narrator

Pilate instructed his troopers to ensure nobody shouted something in protest.

Congregation

Jesus

The eyes of the silent onlookers stayed quiet – some curious, some awed, some resentful.

Tune

Reward the Lord by G. F. Handel from the oratorio Judas Maccabeus

I needed a track that sounded triumphant as if Pilate and his troopers had been marching in.

Narrator

When Jesus had come close to Bethpage and Bethany, on the place referred to as the Mount of Olives, he despatched two of the disciples,

Congregation

Jesus

Go into the village forward of you, and as you enter it you will see that a donkey tied there

Congregation

Jesus

that has by no means been ridden. Carry me that donkey.

Congregation

Jesus

If anybody asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ simply say, ‘The Lord wants it.’”

Congregation

Narrator

So these disciples went out and located issues simply as Jesus had stated.

Congregation

Narrator

The disciples had been simply untying the horse, when its irate proprietor confirmed up. “What do you suppose you’re doing with our donkey?”

Congregation

Narrator

“Actually?” the proprietor requested. “The Lord wants my donkey? Why didn’t you simply say so?” So the disciples,

Congregation

Narrator

Took the donkey

Congregation

Narrator

. . . to Jesus, and after throwing their cloaks on the donkey, they set Jesus on it. As he rode alongside, individuals stored spreading their cloaks on the street. As he was now approaching the trail down from the Mount of Olives, the entire multitude of the disciples

Congregation

Narrator

. . . started to reward God joyfully with a loud voice for all of the deeds of energy that that they had seen. A number of the Pharisees within the crowd stated to him,

Congregation

Jesus

I inform you, if these had been silent, the stones would shout out.

SONG

Siyahamba

We’re strolling within the mild of God (4x)
We’re strolling, strolling, we’re strolling, oh

We’re transferring within the energy of God (2x)

Tune

Hosanna Tune by Paul Zach, Jon Guerra, Kate Bluett

With one breath, “Hosanna!” we cry
With the following one, we are saying “Crucify!”
With one voice, we reward your identify
With the identical voice,
we condemn you to disgrace
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to the Lord!

With palm leaves, we welcome your reign
With twisted thorns, we crown you with ache
You wash our ft to indicate us your love
We wash our arms of your harmless blood
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to the Lord!

We declare you while you are available in pow’r
However we go away you in your horrible hour
We hail you for victory received
However we mock you as you say, “It’s executed.”
