The Jewish marriage happens in two distinct phases, betrothal ‘Kiddushin’
adopted by ‘Nissuin’, the wedding itself. Within the interval between the
betrothal and the wedding, which final for one 12 months, the bride would spend her
time in preparation and purification. She wore a veil each time she went out in
public, intimating that she was betrothed. She was thus thought of being
bought by the bridegroom with a bride-price, and stood consecrated to her
groom.
